September is Healthy Aging Month
September is Healthy Aging Month which focuses on the positive aspects of aging and empowering adults 45 years and older to improve their physical, mental, and social well-being.
5 Ways to Focus on Positive Aging
1. Age is Just a Number
Do you feel like your 30 but you’re really 51? Guess what? There is no rule out there that says you must act your age. Don’t let a number slow you down. It is never too late to start a new career, a new hobby, learn a new skill, or take a class.
2. Think Positive
Choose to have positive thoughts (positive mindset) and manage your self-talk. If you feel a negative thought coming your way, take a minute to reflect and redirect that negativity. Make lemonade out of lemons every day. A positive outlook in life will allow you to feel better about yourself. Always learn from your experiences and put a positive spin on the outcome.
3. Surround Yourself with Positive People
Choose to surround yourself with positive people who are fun and inspire you to live a better life. Stay away from negative people who are always complaining and are never happy. They are toxic and will just bring you down.
4. Be Proactive with Your Health
Get your annual check-ups schedule or start a list so you know when you are due for physicals, health screenings, dental appointments, etc. Keep a journal of how many times you exercise a week with the goal of at least 30 minutes at least three days a week. Buy a fitness tracker and make sure you’re getting your 10,000 steps a day in. Take care of the most precious thing you own – your own body.
5. Do Something Nice for Others
Giving a compliment to someone, volunteering, helping a neighbor, or giving a co-worker a surprise gift will make you feel good and make someone else’s day. Little acts of kindness are a great way to make you feel happy, promote social ties, reduce stress, and inspire others to do the same.
